...One day, Len got really really bored. She didn't want post her works on DA. Neither does she wanna post in FAC. She just want a quiet space for herself. Somewhere where no one will comment or spy on. So she made this :P

What I've been doing...

* Warning wor: Image intensive post.

Aye, now that the exams are all over, I'm now concentrating on my stop motion animation. Things didn't seem to have much progress after that, my partner has been doing some wierd stuff that she discarded at the end of the day. Somehow, really wonder what goes through her mind, but at least we had shifted the setting around so that it would ease the tough task of shooting the animation.

Before the setting was shifted, it was quite a squeezy corner for us, or maybe our set was too big. I did the big window, and it looked pretty with the lighting at it. Shadows....!! Built the stairs too, had to saw my way through for that one after cutting and assembling the pieces together. THe foam was pretty tough. I couldn't finish assembling the main parts together, but Shengyi managed to put them together with the railings. She also did up the other two panels and the floor, kind of like making the overall picture.

The Puppets!

Actually, I intended my first puppet ever made to be used in this production, but as it turns out, was not good enough for it. Made a new one. I volunteered to make the male one while she does the female puppet. Not very sure where to start... and built up his muscles by wrapping foam around. Sewed the pants on.

The gloves was a tough one, couldn't do a real glove so used the UHU glue to solve the problem. Looked pretty rough, but heck... did the job.

Before I even started on my puppet, she had already done the female's clothes. Nicely done, loved the skirt drapery. Her sewing techniques are there (not a drip of UHU glue used at all...), very clean and clear cut, but her mind for the simplest way quite cost some parts of the foam to reveal.

Shirt for my man! Lol, UHU glued the folds, and sew the pieces back and front together. Was hell...

And the coat!! I liked the result, though it's pretty rough there... Trying to pose them in a dancing position. Hey, they stood without any extra fix needed!

Bald......

And wallah!! With a head!

Testing the railings there. But it was fun getting him to stand on the stairs. Took a few more shots.

Sculpted the head of the girl too, since that's what I'm better at. Somehow, the skull wasn't done very well and affected the sculpted head.... T_T

Testing the lighting here. This was with two lights, one a key light from the top and another for the fill. Haha, have been reading up on how to light a stage there. After painting that 'Dive to World' painting, I was pretty much keen on sharpening my lighting skills, to see how it can be improved. Somehow, chanced upon some books in the library about stage lighting. Picked up one to read and boy, pretty much says a lot.

This one is without the fill light. Can see a more dramatic lighting there, a very high contrast. Still like the previous lighting.... but this one has it's own sombre mood.

Rushed out this picture this afternoon for the backgroud. Kind of like it.

And the two small portraits. Hopefully in tomorrow's shooting, everything will go smooth. Had a feeling I'll be shouldering the animation work heavily. Looking forward to the end of it, I guess some debriefing and reflection is needed. Probably it's late for this project, but definitely not for fyp. Many eyes have watched, I doubt it's gonna put her in a very good position. Maybe for me too, haha.

Dive to World!

Process Log details

New picture, but not a very satisfying one. Didn't like it, despite putting in more plans for it. Things didn't work out very well perhaps, spilled my container of water again, kena my astro notes and book tho I don't give much damn about it now. (It's been a nice night-time read though, haha). The salt didn't work well too, wonder if it has to do with the paints? Halfway through the painting process, it started to feel more of a color-filling practice than painting. Something was amiss, might have been the usual spontaneity that arise whenever I do something without plans... or could it be that my brain seeks that randomness? Or maybe just too much bad accidents... Whatever it is, this painting failed to bring out that liveliness of the song.

By Cherryblossom. Kinda screechy girl feel at first ,but the chorus kinda caught me.

Looking back at the sketch, it does felt more happening than the final painting. Enjoyed drawing this one and was pretty much anticipating the painting process. At some point, I was very tempted to bring the painting under the tap as I always do to those I had a hard time with, but heck, just finish it. It seems like the feel that I wanted couldn't be achieve after it's weathered with water... Might be re-doing it someday soon.

Not so messy table. Guess that happens when I get de-motivated. I start cleaning up everything...

Astro hanging on the line...

Process Log

Surprise surpise.... a completed cg painting.... Started at 1pm, decided to stop at 4pm and study. Draggedd till 6pm... Just get carried away. Somehow, cg has become a way to test myself on the anatomy shading of a human, since I have that tendancy to gear towards semi-realism when it comes to cg paintings. No so much for illustrator... Wonder where is my flexibility? It's a medium after all...

Supposed to be studying for monday's astro; old habits die hard...

Have yet to reach the tip of Mt Meru...

...Pretty much says it all. Heh, guess I really draw more when facing exams and stress.... haven no idea where to start reading from, kind of really like a fish thrown into the sea for this module. Actually... for all art history modules... seems as though there aren't hardcore facts other than the size of the canvas/ sculpture/ architecture (even that is debatable due to erosion...)

2.30pm is the exam, having failed the first quiz and not knowing how I'd fare for the second, this is one major exam to pass. But till now... me still drifting... LOL. Well... an artwork to mark the ending of another module.

Wiki References:(although I detest it, but it's the best for last minute stuff... I guess.)
Didn't know churning the ocean of milk has such a philosophy behind... Hinduism isn't just about gods and goddesses, hehe.

Angkor wat, someday.. hopefully go see this magnificent structure.

oh yea.. the final work for compositing assignment. Don't think it's good and too dark, still have time to change it, but I dun think I'll wanna touch it for now...

-------[9.40pm]-------

Been there, dunnit. Not sure if can secure a passing mark... the questions were pretty much thinking questions, asking for one's thoughts about the issues proposed... and I chose one question that was more like a book review >_< It was one of the most unexpected questions... never thought he would ask about the comparisons of the two perspectives proposed by the authors. I happened to read both books and the chunk of philosophy the prof had highlighted in the first few lecture notes a few times (he likes to use many adjectives that kind of gets me lost). It was really thinking, and I churned up things I never really had given thought of before. Although Rawson's perspective was as though 'overthrown' by Kerlogue's, it's was important to keep in mind that SEA was influenced by the external while knowing the own people had their perspective. To sieve through that multilayered ideas and symbolism by identifying the external and gazing directly at the internal, probably one can discover what SEA truly is speaking behind their artworks, which were pretty developed before the influx of the major Indian ideas. But yea, passage of time... it will be hard work since a lot is lost. Haha, judging from the questions he gave, guess he really detested the examinations.

Log: Tsuna VS Hibari

Yea, I was supposed to be studying for tomorrow's exam. But just didn't feel like it. Working on a new piece of painting the past few days, itching to get it done.

Sketch of the picture. Aye, Tsuna vs Hibari during Tsuna's training in the future story arc. Wanted to try my hand on battle scenes and playing with perspective.

Inked sketch. Felt the orientation of the sketch was too stagnant, so decided to give it a tilt. Redrawn Hibari, although it gets no better... That angle was challenging for me.

Having known the exact colors I wanted for Tsuna, I painted it by segments this time, instead of my usual method of splashing the entire picture with paint.

Mixed the paints when wet as I went on, but stuck to 3 primary paints and sometimes, dipping into some dark browns. Tsuna's hand was not inked to give the impression of it being in the fire. Somehow, forgot about that when I inked Hibari's weapon.... ughh...

Got a bit idea-less when it comes to the background color. I wanted the glowy feel, but somehow, I guess I took it the wrong way.

Aye, turned out for the worse actually. The oranges are sticking out too glaringly. Sharp edges. Didn't like it.

Applied pastels. Kind of desperate move to save the picture, though I wanted some dusty smoke impression (like an aftermath of Hibari tring to whack Tsuna but end up cracking the ground after Tsuna dodged and is in the air thinking of the next strike.) Decided to stop the pastel and moved on to the highlights instead. Splatter splatter... got carried away. Saved the picture with the whites, but somehow, the harmony was forcefully made.

Aftermath of all the splatter was a messy table... hoho... got lots to clean up.

Somehow, this log thing kind of start forcing me to look back at the entire process. Halfway through, I began to wonder if I should have done up a color plan before going right into the painting. This randomness had been fun yet troublesome, giving myself problems to solve probably kept my brain active. However... this kind of approach gave my art a 'finished yet still rookie' look, probably what sets me far behind the professional portfolio. Kyah... gonna do more of this logging to see where I'm heading.

Slow Progress...

Random guy/girl... just wanted something to color and found this half done sketch in the A4 drawing block I bought sometime ago. Think I was drawing a girl then, (cos I seldom denote eyelashes in the guys I draw...) but looking back at it jsut now, looks like a guy, but arghh, whatever it is, I had a nice time coloring. Markers again, guess looking at KHR just brought back the medium to me. Wonder when did I stop using them and why...? Got sick of it? The clamp influence in the coloring is still there... but I think it's moving away, somehow.

Have been a bit restless these days, dragging myself to school to complete the stopmo assignment. It was a group project, but due to my partner caught up with her homework, I tried to do whatever I can to complete the puppets and sets before the scheduled time for shooting after exams. Again, the group memebers of the previous stopmo projects asked about my partner, kinda reminded me of Huiying's warning to me back in nyp... I have no idea how to handle such situations... Stopmo isn't her main thing, 3D is. It does sound unfair that I throw everything else aside for this project and finding myself at the station struggling alone, when it's supposed to be a group thing. But neither can I just tell her to throw everything aside for that too. Just didn't know how to organise this, easier if it's done alone maybe. Heh, feel bad, wonder if that's how Huiying felt that time during minor project, when Peiyi and I were drifting. But yea, still gotta move on, better not look at it for now, it's just gonna be demoralizing.

Something amazes me though, it's starting to get easier to throw work aside for me. It's like knowing when to say stop for an assignment and handing it in... Haha, dunno is that a good thing or not? Guess I'm not caring much about schoolwork these days...

Easy Go man...

Lyrics and Chinese Translation

Aye, getting hooked on this song. Just can't get that image of Spanner flying in mid air with that lollipop in his mouth and typing away on the laptop... The undying will and determination of a passionate mechanic!! Fires up the artist sometimes, hahahahaha~ Maybe it's true that people just shine with confidence when they do what they are best at. Just throw away everything else and focus focus focus on the work at hand. Great that I'm now down with just the exams and stop motion work. Managed to hand in everything else, despite the extended deadlines... Very tempted.. but one must know when to stop yea?

After handing in Martin's assignment, somehow... just felt a big load down and out. Finally back at drawing... having watched till 14X eps, the Tsuna-in-Spanner-suit just shouts "DRAW ME!!!!" Used copics this time, neglected the box of markers for quite a long while. Somehow, I'm starting to mix the marker colors around instead of sticking to one hue range at a time. Didn't know how to render the fire though. Looks like a wierd doodle of flames, and a much older Tsuna..... Feels good to pick up the medium again.

Last lesson of animation history, and another life inspiring talk by Prof Heitor. Just love that old man's speech, like a grandpa sometimes, and at times like another random movie junkie teen. He talked about the narrowness of mind this time, not to close off all other options and look at only just one road. A danger of being too specific... seems like there are people complaining about the need for art history lessons and it's usefulness. The history lessons might not be directly useful, yet they have been very inspiring. I didn't enjoy the history lesson back in nyp, never found it useful to memorise hardcore facts. But can't deny that it brought new ideas and identified new styles to explore. The lesson was never a direct, technical module, but one that really expands one's mind and sight to new ideas and discoveries. Same for Mr Sabapathy's history lessons. Haha, the old man tried to fight for an abolishment of examinations, he said, as it was unnecessary, but being in NTU, he was unsuccessful. Guess both profs knows that it isn't about the memorising of facts and stuff, but their students responsibility of absorbing all they can from what they've shown, an expansion. Must say... probably it was because of them that it's really 'Easy Go' for me this semester. Busy immersed in school work, but not forgetting that it is not necessary for me to live that way too.

My Laptop

It's threatening to hang these days, I wonder why... Am I abusing it these days..? Or maybe it's just not used to the everyday work work work lifestyle... Two major deadlines coming, and after that, it's down to one animation and 3 exams. Haiz... please dun throw tantrums during this period....

Digital...

Have been doing some digital stuff for school work as well as a side project these days... As usual, realised I am not very familiar with the software and working methods of digital stuff. Had to do out some roughs on paper before getting down to paint. Anyways, was getting tired of the work, so decided to do some other painting.

WIPs... Aye, Yamamoto Takeshi... I have a fetish for male characters with swords and water around, hehe. Quick sketch (2hrs n not finished.. not that quick after all) based off an anime reference.Aye, looking way too different... and kiddy. While painting the school stuff, I've been de-stressing by watching hitman reborn.... picked up where I left off long time ago at the Vongola rings arc. Hahaha.. long way to go, though i've been keeping up with the latest manga chapters... The new characters look pretty cool! Wonder what's gonna happen there... Can't wait for the new chapter of Fairytail too >_< Erza vs Erza!! Sexy match it will be :p Kyahhh...

Random rant and the Pixar Exhibition

Rant: Skip it cos it's just a personal whining to ease my frustration of the day.

After the tough week I had... it's saturday again and I went along with my mum and the kids to art school again. In between, I went seperate ways from my mum and aunt, and since time was up, I went to fetch the kids first. Knowing that the elders were probably in the market, the kids and I just waited at the foot of the staircase, the kids kind of interacting among themselves, ann monkeying around the railings while Yang and Xiong were discussing about some 'noob' issue. Then came an old woman with a walking stick, who saw the kids and the bags I was carrying and asked if there was a tuition centre in this building. Yea, there was one, as far as I know, the one at the top most floor where I fetched the kids from. She nodded, said some stuff and told me that her grandson was having tuition and she had come to fetch him since the parents couldn't make it for some reason. And started climbing the stairs.

For some reason, I was just horrified to see that. Almost a minute had passed and she was not even up that flight of stairs. Who wouldn't feel bad about it?? Even I was panting when I got up there, I couldn't imagine how she would be like when she got all the way up. Offered to help her get her grandson down and asked for hte kid's name, but maybe for safety reason, she insisted to go up herself and fetch the kid, though she told me I have three kids to look after and didn't want to bother me about it. I regreted not bringing out my handphone... at least a call would be able to confirm if the kid was even up there. I was told later by my mum that there was a tuition centre at the second level. Felt very bad about that... the kid might have been there, save the old woman some torment. Wonder if that was jsut too much self-righteousness, I remembered my friends mocking the young hoggers of the MRT seats and didn't comment about that. Personally felt that everyone has that selfish heart and even if one gives up a seat for the elderly on the train but don't extend that compassion to others whether they like them or not, what's all that righteous talk about? Maybe I'm slapping myself in the face, just sad to be in the position to help but not knowing how to. Aye, just wanted to get that out of my head and did this pastel painting of what I remembered of that old woman.

Pixar exhibition

Yea, it got me into the pastel mode again. It's very very inspiring to see their works up in the science centre, thought I thought the art musuem would have been a greater place for them. Went for the three talks yesterday (aye, didn't go for Good Friday's mass this year, I'm such a bad girl...) I was shocked that not many year 2s came, and not even a familiar soul from nyp.

The Talks
The first talk by Mr Warren Trezevant, (as copied from the email sent from school:

Warren Trezevant joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1995 and has animated on seven of Pixar's feature films, including Finding Nemo, Incredibles and Ratatouille. Taking advantage of his strong technical background, Warren has been exploring ways to take characters off the screen and bring them to life in our world with the Toy Story Zoetrope and the animatronic WALL*E. Warren is currently working with Pixar's software team to improve their animation production software.)

He talked about how he started off, got to know what he wanted to do in his life and how he ended up in pixar. He brought us through the animation production, from the storyboards all the way to the final rendered movie. It was amazing. The storyboards were simple drawings, fixed with dialogue that the makers dubbed themselves. The reel that he showed us was one from UP, the part when Russel discovered the birdie and presented it to the old man. It was hilarious to see images of Russel fixed to a manly voice that tried to 'act kiddy'. Yea, the images, as compared to Ting Zhao's reel I've saw couple years back in NYP was not that detailed, but the shots were pretty much what we see at the end of the movie. Next, the story moved to a very rough animation in 3D. The characters were just there, not doing any detailed movements other than moving from point A to B. It's almost like setting the camera angles and blocking out the major actions. The facial expressions were not done at that stage, but the voices were the final dialogue that was in the movie. After that, it moved to a more detailed phase where all the actions were done. There weren't any shading on the them, all concentration seemed to be on the animation itself. After that, the lighting, shading, rendering; the final outlook. It's pretty amazing. Although I myself didn't had the oppurtunity to go through a proper production in school, I could catch what he said, it was almost like painting a picture, the rough first, get the important form in there (in this case, the animation) and then make it look beautiful and finished.

Throughout the making, the animators do act out the actions of the characters they were animating. He showed us some clips of that, and it was funny watching the animators acting there. Super expressive. During the QnA, it was known that when the voices of the actors were dubbed for the show, their faces were also recorded for the animators to reference to.

[Off: Which reminded me or this video: hahahahahah~ great reference it would be!]

There were many other things he said, the working environment of pixar... but I couldn't remember them all. Oh, and he showed us the toystory zoetrope made of sculptures! (Aye, check up the wiki if you have no idea what it is) It was very amazing, and it's up in the exhibition!

The exhibition

As there was a 2 hour break in between, Shengyi and I went into the exhibition and had a look. She had gotten a ticket to the exhibit that day, which wasn't a very good choice. However, what's done is done and she hoped i could accompany her for the trip. I tried to ask for a change to my tix that was fixed for today and thankfully, they allowed. There wasn't much time for us to see everything, but enough to take a browse at the pictures (!! A browse.... T_T I intend to return another day actually.) Man... it was information overload.... Halfway through, I couldn't take it. Just too much to see and absorb!!!!! I was very inspired by the acrylics and pastel paintings exhibited, especially the ones from Finding nemo and Monsters Inc. My descriptions wouldn't give them justice >_< A definite see for traditional medium and concept art lovers. The character sculptures of the different movies were on exhibit too! It seems like they would build a model for the character and draw out contour lines as a visual aid for modelling. Also, there were a number of concept arts which were done using collage, and that opened a new door to me about the technique too. As long as it can communicate the idea and be done in the fastest speed of the artist, guess anything goes! To hell with the 'only digital for digital media' crap!!!

Didn't really read the descriptions, neither did I settle down to see the videos cos the next talk was starting. Info overload!!!! Info overload!!! Time to grab some woman down to see it!!! XD

Talks continued...

The second talk by Ms DeAnn Cobb:
(Shamelessly copied from the email I got from school again!: DeAnn is an instructor at Pixar University and a Designer for the Exhibitions program within Pixar and abroad. She specializes in color theory and painting and technical art classes such as Photoshop and Illustrator. DeAnn grew up in Marlow Oklahoma and went to Baylor University in Texas where she received her BFA in graphic design. She then went to San Francisco Art Institute for her Masters in painting.)

Maybe cos I had some food earlier on, i started feeling a bit sleepy in the auditorium, but her talk about the art making was as interesting as the previous talk. After a walk through the exhibition, it was even easier to relate to the pieces she showed on screen. What really caught me was the making of 'Bugs Life' concepts. They actually took a video camera and took videos from the ant's point of view. Many things seen in that home made video then became inspiration to the settings and tiny details in the movie. She talked about the pixar culture of 'plussing', an idea about building on ideas. Thought that was a really great way of making ideas instead of just casting things away and saying 'No'. The third speaker, Kim Donovan,

(Kim came to Pixar in 2007 from The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Her role as a project manager at MoMA spanned six years where she worked on projects ranging from art installations to the building of the new Education Center. In the winter of 2005 Kim was involved in the installation of "Pixar: 20 Years of Animation." She eventually stepped into the role of project manager of the traveling exhibition and has been amazed by not only the film making process at Pixar but at the support and fans of Pixar she's met around the world. While in New York, Kim also worked extensively as an actor and is a member of the Ensemble Studio Theatre. She grew up in Sarasota, Florida on Siesta Key and received her degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.)

expanded much more on that topic, saying that the people had a culture of saying 'Yes, and...' instead of 'No, but...'. It's a respect for the idea that someone comes up with, but instead of disregarding it, one adds on to it, and maybe the original idea will slowly morph into the grand idea. Seems like something I can try doing next time when it comes to brainstorming. Another I learnt was... 'story is king'.... (some mantra chanted throughout the entire pixar company). Since almost three quarter of the production would revolve around the story, yea, story is king. But the welfare of the workers are higher than that, she said. So yea, maybe that's where we suck when it comes to working. Drowning in the pile of work and not getting out of the seat for some sports or even food. No wonder so many people hoped to work in the Pixar company.

Yeap, not gonna go further on that anymore. I'm thinking of my next visit to the science centre again, most probably catching a movie too. They are actually screening Up, Toystory 1 and 2 on April, May and June respectively. In 3D at the price of $3 (dun think you need to buy the exhibition tix for that, the screening is in another venue near the exhibition). Aye. I watched it for $10. Why not?

---------------------------------------------------

Side thing: I scored B+ for my astro quiz without preparation, reading notes and attending lecture. Yes, I'm laughing. Things I study like siao ends up as failures while things I don't give a damn about gets passes. Just don't understand how this world works sometimes... S/U astro liao. Heck. Couldn't be this heng in exam next time.

The transition from one stablity to another...

Yes.. if I have a ship cloth with me, possibly I'll be hanging it up at this very moment... haiz. The past few days had been tormenting, the preparation of the presentation was just not going right for me. Having borrowed up to 10 books (7 from the national library and 3 from the school, not counting the photocopied parts from five books found in the school and nation library's reference section), I was maybe overloaded with information and unsure of where to steer this presentation towards. Until the last 8 hours before I had to leave for lessons, I was still in a daze. Knowing my eyes were tired and strained, I tried to sleep, but tossed and turned on my bed, just couldn't. My head was still on the presentation. I have yet to organise my presentation, neither have I even touched the study materials for the day's quiz. So dead.

Tried focusing repeatedly on prayers in my mind (yes, similar to counting sheep) but the words just got jumbled up. Maybe I did sleep a bit, or maybe time just flies past while one just lie on the bed, I got up to face the terror again. Aye, ship cloths... but what? I was constantly asking myself what did I want to focus. The ship motif on these cloths? The region of Lampung? What about the fabric? It was about focusing and zoning in, down to the minimal and specific, shaving off the redundant stuff. After surveying my materials again, the stuff that really appealed to me was the ship motif, and the meaning they portray to these people. However, the way to show these meanings were more obviously symbolised in the rituals which the fabrics that held the motifs were used. There I found it, my theme.

Scribbled away on paper my script of the day, which turned out like a messy rushed out secondary school student's essay. Tried to visualise all that I had wanted to say being said by me, in tha room, with the tutor probably waiting to catch anything I've said that was vague or misinterpreted. Left with two hours, chiong out presentation slides... Zoned down my images to just four examples (initially just wanted to show 2!), fixed with details.

Mum returned with some roti prata and coffee after bringing Yang to school. T_T just touched by her actions...

To commemorate... the very first time I made maximum use of my library cards... Returned two school books already... soon gonna dump the rest into the bookdrops.

The three books at the bottom were referred to for overall knowledge of the subject and color plates, but the real bulk of useful text comes from the reference books from the National Library. Two were early scholarly texts that were written regarding the Indonesian textiles, from which the other books in the photo referenced to. Another was one randomly chanced upon, but it's information surveyed specifically the Lampung region's history and fabric. I was thrilled to find them there, though the book that would have been very useful for this research by Gittinger regarding ship cloths was not found in any libraries.

Unexpectedly, the presentation turned out fine and I was surprised he didn't stop me at any instance and bombard me with questions. >_< Was waiting for that... Anxious yea, since I was the first to present, and the tutor appeared to be in a relatively bad mood when some students had been handing in their quiz papers late despite warning them about his rejection late submissions. I wondered was it that he gave up on reprimanding students, or was it because the subject I touched upon was not very much explained in his lectures. Yea, I stammered, and repeated certain stuff, wonder if that bored people out; forgot to add in some more details due to the roughly drafted script, pausing unexpectedly at times and had minimal information on my slides.

At the end, he asked a few questions, probably to make sure that I was on the right track of thinking when approaching the subject, and offered some views to questions that I was unable to find an answer to. Why is the woman associated with the profane...? It was something that I was shocked to see being repeated in the few early sources, but it was never really expanded upon. No written evidence. Or possibe I overlooked that, since in the search of a specific, I skipped some other details regarding the other parts of Indonesia. All in all, it has been a tiring day... Great to learn some stuff regarding presentation. A tiring process of information digging, assimilating, repackaging and presenting.... for that 15 minutes. Argh. An art yea.... just like an art.

Next up... animation history essay. The library again. Most probably the nearby vcd shop too.
