...One day, Len got really really bored. She didn't want post her works on DA. Neither does she wanna post in FAC. She just want a quiet space for herself. Somewhere where no one will comment or spy on. So she made this :P

On the Sixth Day of the Holidays...

So fast... a week is gonna be over soon... Let's see... six days had passed (almost) and what have I done?

- Drawing assignments done!
- Scanned all my sketches for drawing!
- cross stitching!
- went for a chinese orchestra concert with Huiying!
- Went to shop for a TV set for my neighbour!
- Successfully oppressed my siblings by being at home and hogging the pc!
- Badminton! Lob shots n drop shots! Answer to the hurting wrist!
- Found new methods of playing with watercolors, which included acrylics and water soluble ink!
- sent music to my sis!
- Art history questions tackled! (sort of...)
- Bought my Intuos3 pen!
- Ate breakfast with mum and the kids!
- completed 'Trials and Tribulations', finally!

and not to forget,

- successfully ditched the spoon project for six days!

Heh, still left with homework to be done, but somehow, I felt that this holiday was pretty well spent. Doing things that I like... and I guess my sian-ness of bringing myself to do 'thinking' work still remains. Something that I'll have to work on this time. As for the sketching habit, the watercolors does helped a lot. Seeing a difference in my coloring now.

Issues troubling me now would be my bro... playing maple too much. I've been looking forward to my sister coming back from Australia and us getting a new PC soon. With wireless connection... I guess I can monitor that kid's movements personally, just wondering what sort of people he meets in game... heh, if maple can have a tracking system for dialogues... I wonder. Just hope he gets sick of the game someday, but I guess it isn't gonna be so soon.

Wonder how is Miss Sunshine... Fusion's coming too... time to organise my time again! >_<

Yeap, Maya Fey from Phoenix Wright series. The game had been a bedtime story kind of thing for me these times. It simply put me to sleep with the lengthy dialogues (that's why it's taking me so long to complete), but I continue to play it cos the story's pretty interesting, drama too... Gonna play more of the ink wash style :D

复活!! INTUOS3 启动!

A very mecha title.... lol. Anyways, went for an art history meet yesterday with the group and we ended up in funan's tcc, discussing our presentation questions. I was pretty happy when I saw where we are going, cos previously, I was thinking if I should go down to funan on friday... For? XD The wacom pen yea.... T_T I decided that I should go get it asap, sometime before the next event starts. I don't wanna trouble Dor again for that... Feels so handicapped without it when I need to amend and touch up some stuff digitally before sending them off for printing. But yea, bought one off the shelf and tested it on this old piece of drawing.

While painting this, I kept thinking about what many people had told me about handling this stuff.

Dor reminded me of form and not using too much layers, smudging, and that the 'i', '[' and ']' are friends....
Bridget taught me about the difficulty of rendering a person's mouth area, that it tends to become flat.
Tom Lynch's books talked about the spontaniety of colors, how interest could be built with using a myriad of colors.
Together with Huiying's tips of oil painting a portrait, that the face carries lots more colors that just beige. Haha, she told me something about laziness there giving the dullest colors if I just couldn't care to change the palette.

Somehow, these ideas just kept ringing back and forth while I paint this picture, half trying to keep to Hiroyuki Asada's original palette of colors for the comic. Looking back at my previous digital stuff (...yea, just a few countable attempts), it looked different. And I was quite amazed at how this methods had shortened the time I used for doing a digital picture.... It used to take me more than four hours to get something this small and simple to this level, but I took about two hours for this one... maybe I should try acrylic sometime. Might improve the digital speed when I'm tired of computers, lol.

All in all.... never abuse the tablet pen... especially if it's an intuos3..... T_T

Guardian Angel

Done yesterday, experimenting with the ink on watercolor paper..... was supposed to be reading and preparing for a presentation meet today but just couldn't concentrate on that pile of notes. Argh... talks of discourse, representations, madness and insanity... This is sparta.... T_T

One down, two to go; or three;or four...make it five.

Drawing assignment on grotesque and form... Was happily charcoal-ing away when I realised at the end of it... doesn't look grotesque. Arrggh. I went along the line of 'grotesque doesn't necessarily meant gross' instead of all 'blood gore quasimodo', so came up with 'someone looking into the mirror with skin peeling off' kind of picture (yea, done with a mirror, so the person kind of look a bit like me there... haha, rmeinded me of this pic too.). Wonder if I hit the 'form' criteria there... Might do another one if I'm done with the other assignments...

This morning, I was searching for an old reference in the sketches pile, but can't find it. Instead, found this half-done pic. Since fingers kind of itchy to try that water soluble ink again, I inked it in a sketchy way and applied watercolor paints on it instead of just plain water. Looks pretty.... nostalgic? Haha, yea, the character design was influenced by 'The Lady of Pharis' comic CC lent me sometime back. Haiz... why didn't I buy the book back then....... T_T

Working on the stress

Done with frustration ..at first yea. Sketched with a pen first and applied water all over it. The ink isn't waterproof, so there it goes, all messy. Made it messier by sketching the same thing over again with the ink pen while the surface was still wet. More water, and the paper was kind of eroding, since it wasn't made to take so much damage... Let it dry while I chill down with some yogurt... Came back again and inked the piece one last time with the ink pen, highlights with silver pen.

The source of frustration was a chat on the phone with Siew Khim last night. Not with her, but the person we were talking about... yea... the spoon again. It's pretty frustrating, the tutor trying his best to inspire and guide us, but me not getting much out of his talks... SK had the problem of not being able to develop her ideas further and she is really trying very hard, kind of to the point of frantic, since the due date is coming. While me... just dun like to think. Tried thinking of ideas but many times, I just fall asleep or end up doing something else, a stark contrast to her situation lol. If the tutor's idea of this assignment was to let us find our own way of handling things and getting ideas, then I've found that, most probably one of the awful ways of handling a project.

Anyways, tried to clear my head before I go into thinking... I realised I'll need to do some other stuff before going into work.

Cross stiching. This set was originally my aunt's. She started it a long time ago but didn't continue and was left in her room to collect dust, until we found it again one day during spring cleaning sometime back. I kind of liked the illustration, so wondered if I could try a hand at it. Yea, so she just let me bring it home to stitch and now it's some kind of stress relieving thing... (until the strings go haywire, that is..., frustration...) Guess maybe the next time I'll touch it would be another holiday I think.

Life Update II

For Xiu who will be reading sometime later when I get busy...:

You called back at the right time man... almost wanted to scream into the phone "where the hell are you?!?!?!?!" Anyways, good to know it's just the fault of the laptop... I think next time, we shouldn't get stuff from IT fairs despite the cheap price.... I'd rather have one pc bought at the original store that works for years like this dell PC instead of something that go haywire in less than a year for the sake of saving some bucks....

Yeap, Yangs' Birthday! He chose the cake himself, after swimming lessons, dad and mum brought the kids to JP for that.

The shape of the cake was pretty different from the norm, so he had some time figuring out how he wanted to put his birthday candles on the cake.

I would have just put it around with the strawberries...

But that little perfectionist chose to go around the cream border instead. And that broken blue candle was Ann's work of art... Not. :p

Random photo time~~~ Uncle Michael and the birthday boy!

The kids with the aunts!

You might have noticed, the photos have some lines and are a bit blurry... Yeap, the cam is a goner soon... though it can still take pictures, it gives pictures with lines on them...

And Ting's turn for photo! I'm right behind talking to you there..... Maybe I should send you the bdae video sometime when your laptop is done servicing?

The cake...Too much cream but the berries goes good there. Ann was throwing a tantrum after cutting the cake cos Mum told her she'll be getting the cake last (reason: she's the youngest). Yeap, there goes the day there.

And yea... the tree outside the study room was uprooted due to it's branches falling on the motorbikes. Thank goodness, Dad's bike didn't kena that day. Come to think about it, the time it fell was a day after I submitted the 'crow' assignment. Maybe the crows know the tree branch was unstable and they started cawing very loudly then? Now, I don't hear any cawing nearby, and it's pretty warm in the room even after raining.

Was inspired again after reading Tom Lynch's book and tried to draw the scenery outside the study room window. That's about it for now, maybe another update sometime in the next month...?

Salvaging!

Expanding on the previous sketch, putting a bit of idea in there other than just a character. The watercoloring kind of flopped... I wanted the waters to reflect the sky above, tried sprinkling salt for that, but again, that failed... Since it's irreversible, I just had to find another way out of that. Paint, paint, paint... and I started rendering instead of keeping to the abstract strokes that I initially wanted. Used gouache to salvage the painting, but it didn't help much... The painted strokes in gouache stood out too much on the watercolored painting that the water looked fake.

Ah well... since it's bad, destroy it.

My hands itched and grabbed the pastel box nearby, adding some white pastel on the water and smudging it. 'Hey, it looked pretty alright,' and add some more. Too much, and I erased it. Hey, looking better O_o! And yea, decided to stop there. Maybe that's why I just love traditional mediums.... XD You get unexpected-ness outta them.

Bro's bdae! Gotta take some photos and upload them soon for that woman to seeeee, I hope. Haven't heard from my sis for a couple of days... They said there's some flooding going on in Australia, but I dunno if her area was hit? Sent her emails and no reply.. Inactive on facebook and I don't see any Lidcombe visitor to my bloggie... Hope she's fine.....

Experimenting 2

Experimenting with acrylic and watercolors. The paper was given a painting of white acrylics first, dried before painting watercolors on it. Kind of like the texture, but I wonder if there is a better way for this, cos I used pencil to draw lines on the acrylic painted surface and it kind of affected the watercoloring, tainting the colors with the pencil's black.... Ah well...

Yeap, that's Rena Lanford from Star Ocean 2, a game by tri-ace. Missed the game a lot, maybe cos I never got to finish it due to the faulty disc. Gonna wait till my sis comes back with her psp nyak nyak nyak.

------------- email from Prof Lucy
Keeping this here cos I'm deleting that email and haven't read this through other then a few sentences that caught my eye. Coming back to it soon, I hope.

Hi all,

Here is a related but different take on Simryn Gill's photo series "Dalam"--which means "interior"--here of contemporary Malaysian houses.
I showed some of these photographs as a contemporary echo of Vermeer's domestic interiors in our class.

Huzir Sulaiman is one of Malaysia's more important english language playwrights

For those of you who are interested there is also a more academic article in volume 4 of my journal series FOCAS Forum on Contemporary Art & Society about "Dalam"

Happy Chinese New Year!

A view of the interior
Wide Angle
By HUZIR SULAIMAN

Does the décor of our homes say anything about us? Our columnist explores how we construct our identities – and those of others.

A FEW years ago, the artist Simryn Gill, who grew up in Port Dickson, went up and down Peninsular Malaysia for eight weeks knocking on strangers’ doors and asking if she could photograph their living rooms.

This surprisingly successful tactic resulted in 258 images: square photographs 27.5cm by 27.5cm, showing furnished rooms without the people that belonged there, empty and poetic.

Displayed together on a curved white wall, they formed a hauntingly beautiful exhibition entitled Dalam, commissioned by and displayed at Galeri Petronas in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. (It has since travelled all over the world, including into the collections of the Tate Modern in London, which decided to buy a set of the photographs in 2006.)

No matter how tastefully done a living room is, our first concern is the ethnic origin of the owner. – File pic
Each of the 258 images, displayed without identifying information, made you wonder out loud, in our nosy Malaysian way: “Who lives here, ah?”

Were these mute photographs a challenge? Were you supposed to piece together the identity of the owners, merely by peering at the objects they had in their homes, by the physical evidence of their lives?

I remember reading an interview with the artist in which she said that Malaysian viewers of the exhibition always seemed to want to know, first and foremost, whether the people whose homes were pictured were Malay, Chinese, Indian, or lain-lain.

I was no exception.

At the time, it seemed just one part of the great guessing game, a way of doing detective work from a sociological angle. You could certainly try to deduce their ethnic group, whether based on the tangible presence of items with religious significance (altars, deities, crucifixes or Quranic inscriptions) or on some intangible aesthetic evaluation, half anthropology and half prejudice: “Only Malays buy furniture with gold upholstery. Only Indians have brown and orange curtains.”

And so I did this, like everyone else, and somehow found Chinese-ness in a 3-piece vinyl sofa suite, and other oh-so-clever conclusions.

Now, in retrospect, it strikes me as sad. Are we all so conditioned by the relentless racialist rhetoric of our country that not only are we incapable of seeing living Malaysians as anything other than their ethnic group, we can’t even see empty rooms without wanting to assign them a race?

You might argue that ethnicity and cultural heritage are often an important part of a person’s sense of identity, and that establishing ethnicity would therefore be a necessary step in trying to figure out who these mystery inhabitants were. But let’s be honest: isn’t the question that we always ask in Malaysia not “Who are you?” but “What are you?”

It’s heartbreaking how the human brain, in wanting to process data and classify it in order to understand the world, winds up understanding it even less through that very process of classification.

“Who are you?” is a valid question, a joyful question, a question with an answer as long as a person’s life.

“What are you?” is meant to be answered with a single, inconsequential word. It reduces and dismisses. It’s a communication-stopper. It’s a slap in the face disguised as a question.

Because even if I “knew” your race – let’s say that without asking you, my brilliant human brain had scrutinised your appearance, listened to your accent, and yes, assessed the décor of your living room, and made a classification – what would I know about you, really?

Nothing. Precisely nothing.

I wouldn’t know who made you smile, or laugh, or sing; I wouldn’t know what sacrifices you’d made to bring up your children; I wouldn’t know whether you had loved and lost, or never loved at all.

What are you proudest of? Are you generous, or mean, or neither? What is the greatest kindness you have ever received? What terrifies you in this world? Have you known hunger or thirst? When you close your eyes at night, what runs through your dreams?

These questions would remain unanswered.

But if we want to pull our society out of the dysfunctional muck into which it has slid, it is these very questions that we should be asking one another, so as to truly understand our fellow citizens, to build relationships based on genuine human regard, to accept and cherish – rather than just tolerate and make use of – our fellow Malaysians.

It might be argued that this is all just namby-pamby, touchy-feely, all-people-are-brothers stuff; after all, Malaysian classifications of race are made in order to guarantee political and economic rights – important, real world things that transcend these amorphous ideals of empathy and a personal connection.

But then shouldn’t it be all the more important that these real world distinctions stem from differences that have a basis in reality? Because as scientists tell us, and as we all know in the back of our minds, there is no such thing as race. It is a fiction. I’ll go further: it is a lie.

Kenneth Kidd, the renowned Professor of Genetics, Psychiatry and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Yale University, puts it bluntly: “It is impossible to define the boundaries of a race. Human races do not exist. No subset of humans differs genetically from the rest in a substantial, qualitative way? (Genetic) variation tends to be distributed in a continuous manner among populations so it is not possible to divide populations into distinct subgroups. Thus, race is a social construct, not a scientific, biologic classification of humans.”

We need to keep reminding ourselves that the idea of race is something we have made up, and is therefore something that we can discard and transcend.

Nothing is fixed, biologically – and everything is fluid, culturally. We can learn each other’s languages; we can adopt each other’s customs; and if we are so inclined, we can, with a short sentence, embrace a new religion or renounce an old one. We can, in short, change race – because there is no such thing as race.

Why then are we still, as a nation, metaphorically peering at photographs of the interiors of empty rooms, and asking who lives there, and finding ways to classify one another as different? Shouldn’t we be peering into the interiors of our own souls, and asking who lives there, and finding ways to realise, at long last, that we are all one and the same?

Defragmenting

A random doodle during the art history tutorial. I was getting sleepy... but can't sleep in the middle of presentation, besides, the room was pretty small. The presenter can definitely see what's going on there...

Had no idea what to draw at first, so just did some random lines and found this stingray-ish pattern pretty appealing to me. Repeated it on the next page and wondered how it would be if I put in a person's face in the positive areas. Went home and did some watercoloring, but when the detailing came, I changed my idea a bit, making some patterns carry a smaller image while some carry a slightly magnified image. Turns out pretty interesting...

Weee.... term break week starts! T_T I wrote out a to-do list, and man... there's quite a lot of work to be done... Gotta discipline myself this time and finish these stuff asap. Essay arrr..... gonna cry... brainwork again. (yea, I know uni time means thinking time, let me whine a bit....)

Hands of Nature

Tees! We have to come up with some designs for 2D, used on t-shirts. The requirement was at least three and they must be of a theme. I tried brainstorming some ideas days ago, but the first one still shines out to me...

'Hands of Nature'... (yea, feel the force!!!) Initially inspired by Hokusai's Great Wave and some ancient artwork which depicted the sun with hands. Not exactly a 'wow' idea, striaght to the point (I hope)...

Wondering if the textured one looks a bit too messy...? The colors isn't settled... but I need to buy the t-shirt by this day, so just a rough gauge... I've never done silk screen printing before, and a little search up on the net seems to give more prints done on a lighter background... An article was written on the difficulty of using white paints for this printing, something that was hinted by my tutor's constant suggestion of using white tees.... Maybe I'll see how tough it is tomorrow.

Gotta think more about the colors... after I settled some 3D. Skipped the class today, partly cos of stomach pains, but more of the workload... Haiz... when did I become so last minute...? Really need to be confident with the ideas and go in straight to do the work. The thinking part dragged on too long for many of my assignments. Stuck maybe, sian to think... maybe...

Random babble again

Was talking to a fellow classmate (who I seldom talk to... haha) today and she asked quite a few intriguing questions, and we end up chatting longer than I thought I would...

She asked me what I wanna do after studies. An old question, but always never fails to bug me... I shrugged, dunno what I want to do there, other than wanting to paint and draw. As usual, 'don't you think it's a waste?' ...It's a wierd thing maybe, having the skills to draw and paint well but having no real directions and goal, after coming this far... If I knew what I really want, I wouldn't be in school anymore. It's stupid, and frustrating thoughts.

I can't manage spotlights. To me, being under expectations kills. I realised that I draw less in times when I'm expected to perform magic. WSC proved that I can be pushed far in two years, for the price of extra three months withdrawal from my personal drawing life. (well... a good deal for $2k and vis com skills actually... just that I don't enjoy what I do anymore.) The thought of getting into a good company and rising to greater heights just doesn't sync with my mind...

What I have been doing with my skills.... I realised I had never did a freelance job before. Even if it's a 'freelance' for a friend, it was literally free-lance, an F.O.C job (charity, take that as...)Sounds like the way to become the next artist starving to death. My mentality is pretty... wrecked up. Art, aesthetic... something that reflects what your condition now. The talks of great artists and their latest godly creations doesn't interest me as much as when one talks about how an artwork reflects the mind of the artist at the moment. Reading personalities off a painting, wouldn't that be more fun than striving to be the next top artist doing the next big thing? (yes, wrecked mentality...)

I'm happy when one is inspired or motivated to continue their work when they see mine. Knowing that my work becomes useful to others in a way, I'm happy too. Appreciation for the works you are proud of, what more can I ask? Yea, I lacked the ambition to move forward, yet with each task I'm assigned to do, people find me focused to the point of ambitious. Not to prove myself and get the acknowledgement of the bigshots, just hope that I don't let down myself for not doing what I know I can achieve in the given time.

So the old question...Where will I be in ten years time...?

Alive I hope, with my happy family, eyesight able to see stars at night without needing specs, still loving chocs, in contact with my friends and yea, the 2 kids grown up and matured (no, make it three :p). Making money, I hope, to get by the days, still painting, work needn't be about drawing and design, so long that it spares me time for other stuff like learning cooking, taichi, and 8 hours of sleep with 3 meals everday. Nothing too complicated, just simple things...

Yea, that's why don't be like me. You won't go far in the industry like that, will you?

Fiery fiery... picture :D

Wanted to draw Natsu for sometime! Yea! Have been following the Fairytail series online for sometime.... but I guess I'll be stopping... HAVE TO STOP OR I'LL NOT BUY THE COMIC AGAIN! >_< That's what happened to the reborn comics... just cos I read it online, I didn't feel like buying it when those books were out.... ngyaaaahh......

Anyways, a friend of mine showed me this link after reading my blogpost yesterday, thought it sounded interesting so decided to put a link here: Oscar's Wilde 'All Art is Quite Useless' (at least it reads 'quite'... haha) It's too complicated for me head to understand... and ironically, this week's thursday's Zao Bao papers had flashed out the cutoff points for all schools in ntu, making adm to have the lowest cut off points at A' levels all Ds and 2.58 gpa. I never thought they would put this out... but guess they do look at the portfolio first instead of grades. Looking at how hard my younger sis is studying for her business and IT stuff, I look at myself and wonder what am I doing slacking at home. Yea, maybe you can't compare sharpening a skill with memorising formulas and numbers, but somehow, I felt my paintings more of a relieving process than 'studying' process... A few weeks ago, I've been wanting to paint red (stress and anxiety?), then came purple and blue.... wonder what's next... Guessing green in the week after next haha... the term break is coming! Better catch up with some buddies!

Mr Ho asked if I wanted to return to classes since they are going to concentrate on watercolors! Kind of caught me there.....XD Why not?

Tired of Thinking...

Random painting, used a silver pen to do those lines. It didn't come out nicely during the scan...

Have been feeling very tired lately.... School homework has been squeezing my brain juices these days... Even though I had enough sleep, I still feel tired. I didn't like to think.... a bad thing yea.... but if no conclusion come out of it, I'd rather look at the trees and awe at nature's beauty with some paints ready. Which maybe caused my behaviour of 'not being able to find problems', as what the tutors in school have put it to me.... Since most of the homework requires me to create a problem and solve it, I got stuck, cos I couldn't find problems, hence I have nothing to solve.

I've always thought that dissatisfaction would make me become demanding of many things in life that I'll not see the good of what's around, but somehow, it's becoming quite a block... It's kind of a wierd dilemma in my view. The tutor asked the difference between animals and humans. He said that birds have nests as homes, but their nests doesn't have a roof. Humans live in homes with a roof above their heads, being able to create and all, innovations whatsoever. It got me thinking in another direction, other than his intended persuasion of the greatness of the human's creativity. I began to wonder if because of creating, we end up destroying more than create? All the bird wanted was survival, it builds it's nest, it fills it with it's offspring and what it needed to continue to survive. What about a human? We have created homes and filled it with things we need. But now, it doesn't sound so simple.... what is really survival now? Sure that creativity is a powerful thing, but I really wonder, is it really creativity or just plain stupidity, now that so many things created are just to compliment or add on to the things that were created earlier on. New stuff is adding to the rubbish heap. Or maybe I'm just not approving of the tutor comparing birds with humans? After all, birds make a home with fallen twigs on the tree, humans cut that tree down to make their home on the ground. Aye, creativity. Random....

...See la, that's why I don't like to think.

Old Man Drawing

Yeap, finished and handed in this afternoon to Bridget! Whew.... Haha, I wonder if I have something for old people. The very first cg that got me a prize featured an old man. My very first human bust sculpture was an old man. And now, another old man. Maybe the eyes? Gotta admit, I kind of liked the expression of the old man in this picture and decided to draw it down. Or maybe cos the wrinkly image of the elderly allows me to break away from the usual standard perfection of a human face...

Still feels the picture lacks some 'real-ness' to it, a small thumbnail of it now makes me feel that the left side of his face is in fact quite flat... But I submitted it anyway... letting it go there. Maybe a few years later, it'll be a joy to review this picture again, I hope so...

What did I learn there.... 2b doesn't go well with hb pencils for me...and less force! Every line counts!! (which leads to 6 hours of painful rendering... gotta do something about the time there one day.... not this moment though...)

Hall 8 Logo

Yeap, the assignment on logo design for Hall 8.... Should be youthful, energetic, community building kind of stuff... Quite lost touch with all these. The first one (which I'm sure Ms Amy's gonna blast at me...) is this:

Wanted to show four hands coming together, forming an 8. Quite amateurish there... Woke up in the morning to do it before showing it to Joyce. Guess I gotta find another way of working... Maybe find a strong coffee brew....

Second attempt using the phoenix adopted by the Hall many many years ago. The negative space formed four bird heads, with the shape of the positive space as a phoenix, forming 8... Burning burning burning! Ah well... Dissatisfied with the text, it's pretty redundant to put in the 'VIII' again, but I dunno how else to balance out the logo there... but gonna heck care for now. Time to do 3d and 4d, and finish up that old man drawing.

House Portrait

Original picture here

Yeap, finished this off last night after returning from Huiying's home. Haha, went to her house since she welcomed me there. It's always inspiring to go there, seeing all her works hanging on the walls.... It's now starting to be covered with more oil paintings than watercolors. What I really like was the set of 4 sqaure portraits of her family, lined up in the kitchen. It's really nice to have such stuff hanging around in the house, makes you feel cosy in the occasionally empty place. Yea, her mum works in the night, her father seems to be OT-ing that night, and her sis is away, summing up to only me and her in the house. I would have felt pretty odd, but she's used to it, I guess....

The conte used in this drawing was also given by her. She told me about conte a year ago when she used it during her foundation class and gave me two sticks to try. The tutor sort of told them to cover the entire paper with conte and work backwards with an eraser. It's pretty interesting, and being sick of pencil lines, I tried that technique out with the picture of Gregory House. It was messy at first, but the technique had some allowance to mistakes. The nose was initially too long and I wanted to shorten it, so covered up the entire nose and mouth in black and started again. Later went into details with a white pencil. Pretty cool :D he's got some eye problem there.... And it took the usual 4 hours....

The Last... Operation?

Somehow, the words Bridget said about getting 'some person with interesting features, if not it'll be hard for you in the next assignment' kind of bugged me, so I went surfing the internet for some portraits to draw. I'm guessing that she might ask us to do a caricature in the weeks to come with this portrait, just a wild guess, but no harm doing another portrait. Was thinking of drawing Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean, but it was done many times... Then came the thought of drawing Gregory House from the House Tv series (which my mom was watching every week on cable tv), and I went looking for a headshot of that guy. Came across this interesting photo of House,

which greatly resembled this other picture...

...Must have been the threes-threes-threes. I didn't watch much of the series though, wondering if the photoshoot was meant as a pun or it mean something about the series. ...Holy-man-House?

Back to piah homework!

Homework is taking a different turn...

2 hours... and this was all I managed to do for drawing homework. When Bridget said she wanted a fully rendered portrait, the atelier way, I kind of went '...okie' in my head. It's gonna take a long time to get it done nicely, and it's gonna overshoot 2 hours with my current skills.... What is atelier? I'm kind of wondering, and tried searching up google for that. Seems like it's all realistic and stuff... >_< Painful discipline there.

Anyways, it kind of balanced out with the other homework, cos at least this doesn't need any brainwork... 3D needs ideas for spoon designs, 4D needs ideas of interactivity, and the freeeeking logo for 2D needs ideas... Yea, think I need to think harder for that, if Ms Amy ever sees that logo I made now, she's gonna scream 'what happpppen??? Why liddat??' T_T (我没脸见你啊啊啊Ms Amy! >_< !!!)

Waiting... waiting!

Lol, waiting had been the 'theme' of the day nia... Other than waiting for Chris Toh to start his lesson, was waiting for Beryl in the library. Just so happened that she was rushing off somewhere and asked me to help her look after her bag. I nodded yeah, and off she went..... And the start of a pretty long wait. With me was Huiling, Ping Ting and Jun Yi, all were researching on materials for the assignments at hand. We kind of wanted to leave, but Beryl wasn't back. Everyone was hungry... and hungry people are angry people... :P Told them to leave first, since it was my problem, but they chose to stay on (why.....). Ling called Beryl many times and PT tried to sms for her, but the calls and messages didn't work, cos her phone was in the bag I was looking after. Then came the idea of calling her boy Wen Kai to 'gaurd' her stuff, since he was just staying in the hall nearby. And hey, Beryl came back finally. She was pretty frustrated cos all this while, she had been held up by Chris during her visit to Bridget's office. (Yeah, Chris Toh talks lots...) We're kinda glad the wait was over... and while I scurry off to borrow my library book, I saw Siew Khim. Was waving 'Hi' to her when suddenly, a man in white came into the scene beside her..... !!!!!! Chris Toh arrrrrrrhhhh!!!!! >_<

'Tolong ar, I'm hungry, we hungry arrr' I was begging in my head there... But at least he didn't talk for 20 minutes long...

Sometimes wonder if my stubborness was good... got a bad feeling that I dragged everyone to wait with me, but I didn't want to hand the belongings of someone who trusted it to me to someone else. Even the thought of passing it to Wen Kai just didn't feel right there... It was my problem, why throw it to someone else? However... I guess my initial judgement was right (or I think so...), Beryl intended it to be a short trip, just some randomness got her held up for an hour more. Haha, JY asked me if I'm playing mind games there... it didn't cross my mind, but I wonder after that if my actions had caused others to feel uncomfortable. PT was like a big sis, trying to find alternatibes to solve the problem, Ling emphatised with me in that situation and stayed on, JY felt bad leaving the ladies behind and I think he was sketching there, lol. The reactions of everyone to a pure thought of believing someone would return. Heh, guess uni life isn't that cold.

A painting done at midnight actually, the picture drawn yesterday after the crow thingy during Art History lecture, which explains the 'crows' there... XD

'The Sound' of 4D is gone... 'the Spoon' of 3D is coming...

Yeap, the sound assignment was due this morning and hey, glad that it's over. Though it wasn't anywhere good, I had some fun doing it, recording my bro and sister's 'crow caws' and mixing with the real crow caws. Gotta admit that I wasn't very enthusiastic about the project... but ah well... I realised that the holidays had led me to sharpen the skill of slacking.

Did some watercoloring despite knowing that I have 3D homework due before the morning starts tommorrow... (dun ask me why I'm blogging...) The level of 'sianess' to drag oneself into the homework mode.... I wonder if it's me getting less focused, or is there something wrong somewhere? Ah well, I never really pumped focus into my archer stats anyway. Random. XD

Random...

Was waiting for Bridget's arrival after lunch break, and the model was sitting there, asking if anyone wanna draw him. He had a point, since he was hired to pose for us, so why not? Did a quick watercolor painting of him there in his cowboy suit.

I really wonder if he is a real cowboy.... ah well....

My 'crow noise' was quite badly done, so gonna redo it tonight.... (Piah all the way till it's done). Realised that I dun have the sense of rythmn to create one. Got kind of stuck with that.

Random painting while waiting to use the home pc.... Nope, not my sis, but my neighbour's hogging it. Hmm... I should try some new colors...
